Chapter thirteen

What Happens Next Will Shock You

No sooner than Victor had left and everyone else seemed distracted in conversation, Robert approached me about how you’d expect a 17-year-old virgin with zero social skills would approach the first hot woman he’d noticed. Which is to say his body language was a neon sign of uncertainty and shyness.

“Uh, hey,” he managed after fidgeting a few seconds.

“Yes?”

“So, Victor said something about trying to teach you magic?”

Ugh. I hated the whole ‘ending statements in a serious conversation like they were questions’ bit. Literally every person I’d dealt with professionally who did that was a consummate coward on some level. Grow some balls, son.

“Well, anyway,” he said after I elected to drink my soda instead of replying. “I was wondering if you wanted me to or not. Here’s not a good place.”

I kept the smirk off my face as I said, “Yeah, I’m sure we can find someplace quiet we could be alone.”

Not laughing at the utter vapor lock that comment elicited was a hell of a lot harder. I don’t think I was successful. “Relax, Bobcat, I’m fucking with you. Sure, lead wherever.”

He glared at me and instead of going back to my room where it was quiet, he went outside and stopped near the breaker box.

“Any particular reason why here’s better than anywhere else?” I asked as he sat in the leaves by the box.

“Less noise, fewer people. Not just verbal noise, but electrical, too.” That makes a certain amount of sense I suppose. Good Idea was confused and asked me a perfectly good question: shouldn’t sitting next to the breaker box be noisier then? “So, do you have any idea how electricity actually works?”

I stared at the kid. At the nerd level, no, I certainly did not. At the “I can do basic electrical work without killing myself” level, I certainly did. “Define ‘works’ in this context. I’ve rewired things around the house without killing myself or setting shit I didn’t mean to on fire.”

“Right. So electricity moves easiest path to ground is about where you’re at then. It’s a hell of a lot more complex than that, but that’s certainly better than I expected.”

Better than you expected, eh? Dumb grunt is dumb then, I guess. Ug sorry to disappoint, oh great wise one. Ug go back to cave now. I kept that to myself, though. Right now he was the one teaching, not me. Plenty of opportunity to rub his face in that later and not ruin whatever he might teach me here.

“So, most of what you’ve learned in any science class is basically wrong. It’s all been dumbed down to be easier to digest, approximated to make it easier to learn. Electrons and protons are only mostly things, and they’re both fickle little assholes. Electrons more so.” He held out a hand and fixed his eyes on the air above it. “The atoms here are all widely spaced and don’t particularly care to stick to one another. The electrons attached to those atoms may or may not be all that attached, depending on temperature.
